A life coach is a relatively new profession. It’s been around for a while, but it’s just now being recognized as a valuable tool. It was typically seen as somewhat of a luxury to have in life, but now that more and more people are seeing the benefits, it’s becoming an industry where many people have coaches to get that extra boost in life that they want.
What is a life coach?
The International Coach Federation (ICF) defines coaching as ICF defines coaching as partnering with clients in a thought-provoking and creative process that inspires them to maximize their personal and professional potential.
In other words, coaching is a space where you can come in and figure out different aspects of life, and get action steps on what to do next.
Coaching can happen for anything. From relationships to finances, there’s a coach for everyone. (Find one here)
I myself have had a coach for years now, and it has transformed my life completely.
When I first went to see a life coach, I was depressed, heartbroken, and grieving. I had just lost the biggest romantic relationship in my life, my father had recently passed away, and I was fresh out of graduating college. I needed guidance.
Life coaching changed my life so much, that I decided to become one myself.
Without further ado, here are ten reasons why I believe everyone should have a life coach.
This is the place we all want to get to right? Being able to accept our lives for what they are and be able to change them as we please. Acceptance is a hard space to get to, but a coach can help. By engaging in this reflective, nonjudgmental space, you’ll be able to express what’s going on and accept it when you’re ready.
A coach can help you see your life from many different angles, which allows you to see the things you’re having a hard time accepting in a new light, and sometimes all it takes is a perspective change for us to be able to accept something.
Trust me, during coaching sessions you’ll start by accepting smaller things about yourself that you have been having a hard time doing, and the momentum will go from there.
I went from completely hating and ignoring my chronic illness (cystic fibrosis) to being an advocate for it. It took a lot of hard work, but I did it, and I couldn’t have done it without entering the coaching space I was a part of.
I don’t know about you, but when I look online, all I see is judgment. Judgment has become such a big part of our lives because of spaces like Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram, where judgment runs wild.
Most of us face judgment constantly offline as well, whether it’s from other family members, or people in school, or coworkers at our job.
Entering a life coaching space where there’s no judgment, is such a stark contrast from how we usually live, that you’ll wonder how you’ve been surviving in such a judgemental world.
Coaches are supposed to help you get to where YOU want to be, not project themselves onto you. Although this may happen sometimes, it should not be a common occurrence.
Life can be full of unknowns. I know that’s why I went to a life coach. I didn’t know what to do, and I was looking for guidance. Having a coach to talk with every week can help you find and create your own unique path in this world.
I know that’s what I needed. I needed to learn how to own my talents and my strengths so I could learn how to guide myself, but first I needed that helping hand.
The beauty with coaching is that you get guided, you don’t get helped.
A good coach will help guide you to what your own intelligence and intuition are telling you to do. we all have the answers we need inside of us. A coach just helps us see those answers.
4. Space for Creative Solutions
So often we’re focused on what is stopping us in our lives. We’re so worried about the obstacles that we don’t look for ways around them, or better yet, ways to embrace them. Gabby Bernstein, says that “Obstacles are a detour in the right direction.” This is how a coach operates and can help you. Seeing your obstacles as just another aspect in life putting you on the correct path, allows you to come up with creative solutions.
One of my favorite people, Sam Tarell told me about the difference between convergent and divergent thinking. Convergent thinking is thinking that there is only one best/correct solution. Convergent thinking is recognizing that there is no right answer, that there is a multitude of answers on how to approach things. The difference between “2+2=4” and “how many ways can we get to four as an answer?” Divergent thinking is what a coach will help you do, by seeing the many ways in which you can get what you want out of life.
In life, we can have a hard time holding ourselves accountable. Especially when we’re stepping into unknown and challenging parts of life. Having a life coach can help you by having someone there for you to make sure you’re following the goals you set for yourself.
I know accountability can sound scary, but when it comes to life coaching, you shouldn’t have any fear at all. A good coach won’t help you set goals that you aren’t comfortable with. Yes, you may stretch your limits and enter new territory that may seem uncomfortable, but the coach should make sure you’re ready for that push. If you come across a coach that is pushing you past your own limits to the point you feel you’re suffering, find another coach.
At the end of every session, your coach will help you set goals to achieve before your next session, or at some point in the near future.
Then they’ll follow up with you in a way you feel comfortable with to help you be accountable.
This helped me tremendously as I had a problem with not being motivated enough on my own while I was depressed to do what I wanted to. The gentle reminder to keep heading towards my goals while I was depressed was a lifesaver.
6. Space For Reflection
How often do you get time in your life to sit and talk about your life for an hour? Not gossiping about it, but actually talking about it. Being open and honest about what you’re going through?
This is a sacred space that we don’t allow ourselves to experience very often.
Our attention and focus are two of our most powerful attributes as people. Rarely do we allow ourselves to focus on ourselves.
Having a place where every single week you can focus on where you are and where you want to be is beautiful.
When I first started getting life coached, I began to look forward to my session every week. I knew I would leave feeling empowered to create my life in the way that I wanted.
Having a space for reflection will change your life.

There are a lot of times in our lives where we’re doing something and not even noticing it. We can be beating ourselves up and not be aware, caught in destructive patterns, and be enabling ourselves to continue bad behavior and not even know it.
A coach can help with all of this. A well-trained coach is great at reflecting back to you important things that you should become aware of.
By becoming aware, you can change. Without acknowledgment and awareness, nothing can change.
Awareness is always the first step.
There you have it. These are seven reasons (there are many more) how a life coach can help you. If you’re wanting a coach, I’m running a promotion right now, where if you haven’t worked with me before, the first session is $20
I can’t wait to work with you and help guide you into a place of acceptance and growth.
